Kennedy Speech re Science & Space..
National Anthem sung, speeches including introduction from Dean of Rice University and L.B.J introducing Kennedy and Kennedy speech:
“….Delighted to be here on this occasion in a college noted for knowledge….in an hour of change….the vast stretches of the unknown….still outstrip our comprehension…50 ,000 years of mans history….we know very little….man emerged from his caves….only five years ago man learned to write….less than 2 months ago….the steam engine arrived….only last week did we discover penicillin….we will have literally reached the stars before midnight….no nation that expects to be a leader can expect to stay behind in space….Houston….will become the heart of an engineering community….NASA expects to double….to direct new space efforts over 1,000,000,000 dollars….space expenditures will soon rise from 40 cents to more than 50 cents a week for every man woman and child….we shall send to the moon from Houston a spaceship….and return it safely to earth….and do all this and do it right before this decade is out….will be done in the decade of the 60s….but it will be done….putting a man on the moon as a great national effort of the USA….George Mallory asked “because it’s there….well space is there….and greatest adventure man has ever embarked, thank-you.”
